The Project

The national and international ORCA DEL FIN DEL MUNDO Project was created to for the first time in Chile to conduct research, conservation and public information, and to understand the biology and socio-ecology of Orcas ( Orcinus orca ) and their habitat, through environmental research and education. For this purpose the project seeks inter-regional involvement and cooperation with government and non-government institutions and scientists and the general public affectively and professionally linked to this species which, on account of being an end-predator of the ocean food chain and found throughout all seas of the world, is a flagship species for the conservation of aquatic mammals and the marine ecosystem in general. Our main aims are to:

  • Contribute to scientific knowledge about marine mammals in general and orcas in particular in Chile with a view to determining conservation strategies.
  • Conduct projects and activities for the conservation of marine mammals and the marine ecosystem of the orca habitat.
  • Promote the exchange of information and inter-regional and international cooperation among government and non-government institutions to gather information about this species and hence jointly conduct common projects for conservation of orcas and marine mammals in general.
  • Facilitate training and knowledge through environmental education, fostering sustainable development and the rational use of marine resources in terms that are compatible with the general purpose of conservation of orcas and their habitat.
